CBLDF: You spend a goodly amount of your life volunteering for causes and art. Tell me why volunteerism is important to you.

Pam Noles: You have to do things not for yourself alone. Free-range money is not something I have, but I’ve got a variety of skills I’m happy to put to use in the service of causes I believe in. I come from a long line of activist volunteers, so service to a bigger cause comes natural to me. On the practical side, I’ve discovered abilities I didn’t know I had due to volunteering, and I’ve met and made many wonderful friends because of volunteer activities. Volunteering is great for your social life!

I'll just add a little bit of What's In My Head when reading the source copy they pulled this from. To which I'm not gonna link because well duh.

Rima The Jungle girl has no trace of any European ancestry in her features – she is clearly native no really don't go by the illustration, trust the copy over the illustration, or any experience you may have had talking to indigenous native persons in addition to whatever you think you saw in National Geographic because she is supernaturally beautiful as all indigenous native persons are, just tweaked a little bit so that she conforms to universally acknowledged standards of beauty which is necessary for the market and the wet dreams of our target audience, we went through the same effort that Werner did to find an indigenous native woman like this among all of the regular ones well except for the part where we just sat on our asses and drew it so anyway that's one of the reasons she is also always mysterious  because that's why indigenous native persons keep showing up in National Geographic when you think about it, and we're just reflecting that in our work, and that's  She never speaks, but whistles as if she’s talking to birds – the siren of any story she’s in just like in National Geographic, sort of, and since she's not a main character, but a catalyst that drags the real main characters along to their inevitable fates which as we all know is the prime function of any brown (but not too brown in our case lol) character in mainstream entertainment what she does always leads to the protagonist of the story showing what he/she is really all about and also fuck him using her mysterious native vaginal tricks oppressed white women don't know because they weren't raised in the natively wild freedom of the jungle. 

My guess? It'll be like LoEG. Remixed pulp world where certain issues are safely taken on under a false veneer of we are all so hipster progressive, while the equally difficult and tricky will be largely ignored. You know, like steampunk in general! That's so very In now. Quite enjoyable provided you have your darkly tinted goggles so tightly strapped to your fucking brain no Unpleasant Realities Of The Time can seep through the little brass shield things on the sides and harsh your remix squee.

Apparently There's More Than One Batman

So, there I am on the bus. Again. Because there's been car drama. Again.

Usually when busing it I swing between well at least I can catch up on some reading and I hate my life and everything about it. 

But sometimes the bus provides free entertainment. On this particular day the show arrived in the form of a homeless guy shouting random Batman facts. Thing is, his Batman lives on Earth-2.

"Batman ain't got no lawyers!"

"Batman been to the moon!"

Whenever someone unstable is on the bus, the default response is Do Not Engage. People were trying to act like they didn't hear anything, which was hard because they were also trying not to laugh.

"Batman knows Kobe personally!"

There was a Latino couple sitting behind me, the man quietly translating to the woman what the guy was saying. With every new fact, the woman said (in Spanish) "What Batman is this? This is not Batman." 

I thought I was going to die.

The guy eventually gets off at LA Trade Tech. 

"Y'all muthafuckas think Batman went to school? HELL NO. He bought his shit!"

The entire bus fell out, including the driver. The people on the sidewalk, who had no idea what the hell was going on, just stared at him as he wandered down the street, still shouting Earth-2 Batman facts.

That was a good day on the bus.

Max Brooks - Recorded Attacks

Yay!

I got a small preview of this two years ago (?) at CCI. The actual work is finally coming out! This is a comic book adaptation of some of the incidents described mostly in The Zombie Survival Guide, but I think there might also be a couple from World War Z. I loved both of those books, so can't wait to see this.

Meanwhile, he has a website! Finally.

Sneak Peek From Tonight's Melvin Van Peebles Event, With A Bonus of Bingham

MVP is on tour with his new (and first) graphic novel, a companion piece to his new movie. I got the regular paperback version tonight.*** But if you have more money than me, you can order the hardcopy version direct from the publisher, limited to 100 and each comes with a drawing by MVP! Like all the greats, he put Eso Won Books on his visiting list. The movie is playing somewhere in LA on Friday. I'll update with the deets once I track them down...I was too geeked out to remember to ask.

(If Bingham's name is not ringing a bell? One word - Ali. Yeah, that's the guy who shot the iconic pictures you are familiar with.)

It took me three buses to get there from work tonight, but it was *worth* it!

*** Since money is scant I could only get one copy, so I got one for my Dad for Christmas. I'll probably send it to him before Christmas because it's gonna kill me to wait. MVP wrote the sweetest inscription to my Dad in the book. God I love this fucking town so much.

Crumb’s psychedelic comics—including the characters Fritz the Cat, Mr. Natural, Devil Girl and the popular Keep on Truckin’ cartoon— propelled him overnight to celebrity status in San Francisco’s burgeoning underground scene. His charming “bigfoot” style fused with overt sexual images were very well received in the free-love capital—but also led to obscenity arrests, copyright ownership lawsuits and years of trouble with the IRS. It wasn’t until the mid-’80s that Crumb began to receive widespread recognition for the importance of his work, which unapologetically unveiled the disturbing side of the American psyche. Now living in France, Robert Crumb makes a very rare public appearance, joining longtime friend and art editor for The New Yorker, Françoise Mouly, for a candid discussion about the controversial artist’s life and his highly anticipated new project, an illustrated version of Genesis.

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition “The Bible Illuminated: R. Crumb’s Book of Genesis,” on view Oct. 24–Feb. 7 at the Hammer Museum.
